Dr Tianning Tang appointed Course Director for Intelligent Earth Centre for Doctoral Training

Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellow Dr Tianning (Tim) Tang has been appointed Course Director for a new Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) at the University of Oxford, called Intelligent Earth.

Intelligent Earth brings together academics from key environmental science and AI departments across Oxford with non-academic partners to train a new generation of DPhil students to tackle some of the most pressing environmental issues using AI through closely connected themes: climate, biodiversity, natural hazards, environmental solutions and core AI research. Tim’s role will involve helping to develop and deliver the curriculum and training programme for this exciting new CDT, which will admit around 20 doctoral students annually. Tim will continue to work on his Schmidt AI in Science project, which he started in April 2023, which utilises machine learning (ML) to characterise the initiation of wave breaking and seeks a novel equation-based description of the new wave breaking discovered by ML.

Tim says:

This role provides me with a great opportunity to contribute to AI in Science from a new perspective – training the next generation of researchers who are equipped with sufficient AI knowledge, and willing to bring environmental science forward. I much appreciate the training and experiences the Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship programme has offered, which enabled me to land in this new position. I hope I can bring a similar experience to the new CDT students in the Intelligent Earth CDT programme.
